Users who have accidentally update to iOS 8.1.1 which is the most recent firmware version released by Apple can now downgrade iOS 8.1.1 to iOS 8.1. This is important to anyone who wishes to jailbreak his or her smartphone or tablet using the Chinese Pangu jailbreak tool which doesn’t support the new firmware. Apple will soon stop signing iOS 8.1 and it will become impossible to downgrade then. While there is still time to take this step after iOS 8.1.1 installation and return to the previous operating system version on your iPhone or iPad, you better take this chance and downgrade. We’ll explain how to downgrade iOS 8.1.1 in the guide below. Notes.
  • It is currently possible to get back to iOS 8.1 only. Once Apple stops signing this version you will fail to downgrade.
  • You are following this instruction at your own risk.

How to Downgrade iOS 8.1.1 to 8.1

Step 1. Backup your iDevice via iTunes or iCloud. You can use any of these two options and the backup copy is a must have when you are downgrading or jailbreaking. It saves all your personal data and allows you restoring in case anything goes wrong. Step 2. You should download iOS 8.1 version for your particular device. Just Google it and you will find the link for your model of iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Step 3. Plug in your iDevice [the one that is already updated to iOS 8.1.1] to your Mac / PC and launch iTunes. Step 4. You should now choose your smartphone or tablet in the iTunes’ top right corner menu. Step 5. Click on Shift [if you are using Windows] or Alt/Option [if you are on Mac] and at the same time press Check for Update option in iTunes. Step 6. iTunes will allow you pointing to iOS 8.1 ipsw file that you got in Step 2. Do so and confirm this step when iTunes asks you if you wish to update to iOS 8.1. Select Update option. Step 7. When iTunes finishes downgrading your iOS 8.1.1 iPhone back to iOS 8.1 your smartphone will restart and ask you to “Slide to upgrade” which you, of course, do. You’ll have to enter your passcode and the process will continue. Sometimes users are asked to activate their gadgets. Step 8. Hooray! Everything is finally performed and you are now running iOS 8.1 again. Congratulations!
