About an hour ago famous jailbreak and unlock hacker pod2g gave us one more clue about iOS 5.1 untethered jailbreak status. He says that there's no sure date for jailbreak release. We posted about the jailbreak progress and his earlier tweets here. He already said that they have all the exploits needed for jailbreak and even passed through ASLR (address space layout randomization) on device's boot. That means that the hacker is on the final stage.

Considering written above we can say that this situation is very undefined. We have to understand that most of the hackers have their normal jobs which the can't quit. Moreover, few days ago i0n1c (Stefan Esser), pod2g, MuscleNerd and some other hackers had a little twitter argument about public jailbreak releases and Stuff. They discussed the money question - should one make jailbreaking commercial thing or not and should they sell it or just ask for voluntary donations to be able to spend more time on jailbreaking and hacking. pod2g gave a clear answer that he wouldn't like to make his jailbreaking work commercial and keep it as a hobby. He didn't agree with i0n1c that other people use their work for making money and insisted on developing public exploits for jailbreaking community.  That's why it will be a long process until we'll see an iOS 5.1 untethered jailbreak. You know, it's very awkward situation when thousands of people are waiting for a bunch of guys to develop the iOS 5.1 jailbreak and can't do nothing about it.
